This was the first time that Chicken Katsu Records had booked an event at Boon Bar and I was looking forward to it since it'd been a long time since we had done something in good ol' Futenma, Ginowan. Shinobu (SASPIRILLA) and the rest of the Nishihara crew had put together a show here a couple months back and had a really good turn around so that was a big plus for this event.
To start the night off, it was our good friend from Osaka by the name of Tomo Shimoda. He actually wasn't scheduled to play but after meeting him at Tropicana, Yutaka (SELFISH GENE) and I asked him to play a few songs to start the Christmas Party off. Tomo-kun had been traveling Okinawa, from Okinawa City to Chatan to Kin to Nago and back to Okinawa City and then back home to Osaka just in time for New Years.
Next up was RED BACKET who played mostly HI-STANDARD covers but they did throw in a couple originals as well. They're young and full of energy so be on the look out for them!
SELFISH GENE started their set off in a comedy actish way with Tooru on bass and Ayano on drums. The song was "Art Nature" which Tooru has been strongly promoting since about a week prior to this event. Quite heavy with some silly lyrics, would make a good B-side for an upcoming SELFISH GENE single. After that Tooru took to the drums and Ayano to the bass and then the band played one of the best gigs that I have ever witnessed from any incarnation of SELFISH GENE. Starting out on a very SONIC YOUTHish vibe gradually evolving into THE VELVET UNDERGROUND. They played all of Yutaka's classic originals ("Change With Time", "There's No Way In There's No Way Out", etc.) as well as the newly penned "Jet Coaster". This was their first show with Takashi on second guitar and Yutaka seemed more comfortable than I've ever seen. Their twin guitars weeved, accented, and intertwined beautifully. Yutaka has finally gotten this machine rolling after some 13 years of trying, giving up, tightening the screws, and trying all over again. Thank God he did and I can't wait to hear what else this lineup has up their sleeves.
SASPIRILLA took the stage after some time off due to a broken arm and well, not really. Kazuro couldn't play that night cause he broke his hand. For this show they recruited Shinobu's SPILITUS alumni Kokusho-kun to the guitar and backing vocals. Kokusho's guitar blended in naturally with the loud noisy chaos that is SASPIRILLA, at times hinting more toward MUNCHKINS IN THE CAN but there's nothing wrong with that. The band played all the familiar tunes that make up the SASPIRILLA catalog ("The Quest", "Social Gathering Of Sleep Walking Mummies", etc.) as wells as a cover of TOM PETTY & THE HEARTBREAKERS' "Walls".
This night I guess that HI-CHEESE had been dealt the drunk comedy act card that always pops up at these Chicken Katsu Records' events. They couldn't really finish any songs but they made up for it by clowning around and swapping jokes.
THE RINGOS play pretty much pop punk but a bit more aggressive with a heavy lean toward straight forward rock. I need to check them out again to really write up a review so be on the look out for these guys as well.
Near the end of the night during the after party SELFISH GENE and SASPIRILLA took the stage again to play short sets for Yuko-chan (long time Chicken Katsu Records supporter), who showed up near the middle of THE RINGOS' set.
