Back to the ol' Bar Boon for another night of beer drenched loud and noisy rock-n-roll! Tomigusuku pop punk band RED BACKET started it off with a nice set of HI-STANDARD covers. That's cool in all but I think it's time they start focusing more on their own songs.
SELFISH GENE was second on the bill and back to a trio lineup with Koji (ex EARLY CHINA) on bass. They started the set off with the Rocky Theme song playing in the background... then from the entrance of the bar came Bocky dressed in sweat pants and looking like he just took few a punches to the face. As you can imagine Bocky's identity is one Tooru Yamashiro, the drummer of the band. SELFISH GENE played a short set with all the songs that come to mind when you think of what Yutaka has written over the years. Head on over to http://www.myspace.com/selfishgeneabiranke to get an idea of what I mean.
HI-CHEESE kicked ass and it made up for the drunk chaotic set that haunted them from the last time they played at Boon (2006 Christmas Party). To me the best way to describe them is THE REPLACEMENTS mixed with THE BLUE HEARTS, definitely be on the look out for these guys.
This was the first official gig for MUNCHKINS IN THE CAN since the breakup back in 2002. See the band reformed back in April with original members (and masterminds) Louie and Weldon along with new drummer Shinobu (but not really since he's been doing SASPIRILLA with Weldon since 2005). Even though Weldon wasn't feeling good, when that first note struck he got into full gear and there was no doubt that THE MUNCHKINS are back! There was some jackass who claims that he used to be one of the former guitar players for MURASAKI and he took it upon himself to take Louie's guitar and start jamming in the middle of the band's set. As you can imagine that didn't go over to well and so Louie left the bar right after the MUNCHKINS' set. Luckily for that guy Bocky had left the bar as well... or else he would've felt the wrath of "The Eye Of The Kitten"!
