This all came to be from Martin (owner of Paddy Macs) finding out that we've been doing a true independent record label for 14 some years and that we've got a good knowledge about bands that in some way or another fall into the punk genre. So with him promoting and backing it up I felt that we really had to dish out the goods... so the youthful pop punk energy of RED BACKET, the crazy comedy meets punk rock-n-roll of HI-CHEESE, the Velvet Underground meets 4AD label of SELFISH GENE, and the chaos meets melodic post punk of MUNCHKINS IN THE CAN it'll be... We agree on the weekend before Halloween and it was looking to be a great event for all... then everybody except Tooru from SELFISH GENE said they couldn't play, then members of RED BACKET couldn't do it, then HI-CHEESE, then Shinobu from MUNCHKINS... AGGGH! Luckily through MySpace we recruit a local band named VAIDURYA and Tooru says he has some kind of project with a co-worker so they could fill SELFISH GENE's slot. Whew, but don't relax yet... on the day of the show we can only get the vocals to come out of one speaker... fuck!... then to the rescue comes jack of all trades Rage from American Graffiti Tattoos. Whew, what's next... the bass amp is all fucked up... fuckin' shit!... thankfully Nathan from American Graffiti Tattoos runs home and picks up his amp. Finally everything's all set, well except Martin who looks like his head's gonna fuckin' explode, then again he's always lit up about something. So now the gunjins are all liquored up and yelling "Bands when are they playing - The Clash, Sex Pistols, Exploited, Social Distortion"... Ok, here we go... give it some bollocks! wait a minute where the fuck is Tooru and this supposed bandmate of his... Oh shit!

In the door walks Louie so Weldon gives half his plate of fish & chips to some friends of Yuko and they take the stage. Keeping to MUNCHKINS IN THE CAN's policy of not following in the "cancelling gig" footsteps of Morrissey they get an old drummer friend Yuko (ex MB) to fill in for Shinobu. They kick it off with the bass line from Bauhaus "Bela Lugosi's Dead" and drive it into the ol' melodic noise rocker "Gallivant". Of course Tooru walks in with a plastic bag over his head during the 2nd song, without his stand up bass playing comrade. Anyways the MUNCHKINS keep playing, they actually play more of their mid paced post punk songs rather than the hard hitting spastic noise fests that most people associate with the band. The MUNCHKINS also include the ol' John Peel favorite "Teenage Kicks" by The Undertones as well as Morrissey's "Everyday Is Like Sunday".

BOCKY & THE WOODMAN - Hey, you gotta give it up to Tooru for at least showing up (an hour and half late though) and trying to make something out of nothing. Tooru gets Louie (MUNCHKINS) to pick up the bass and they do a little improv jam thing including an instrumental version of the STOOPIDLY YOURS' song "Umi". In the midst of the chaos the gunjins also get their Sex Pistols request even though it was just drums, vocals, and the guitar riff being orally hummed into a mic by Tooru. Quite embarrasing... someone get me another pint!

Paddy Macs' had their costume contest around this time and Elvis took home the prize... so where the fuck was he when we were looking for bands. Closing the live music for the night (or at least that's what we thought) was VAIDURYA. You can tell that they've spent a good amount of time listening to The Melvins, Dinosaur Jr, Pixies, and of course SubPop era Nirvana. It's refreshing to hear a band pulling from that sound admist all the MTVish pop punk that's plagued and soiled the island. Check these guys out if you've get a chance!

Martin said we were pure shite but he did come out with a tray of car bombs for the band members at the end of the night so that's that I guess... Oh, I almost forgot Louie really had to close the night out by getting into G-Dog mode and rapping with the guys from Ichiban Boshi Curry Cafe & Bar... Fuck, I just ordered another Bass Pale Ale and oh no, here comes the Irish Frankenstein to ask me what the fuck Louie thinks he's doing!
